Humans have cumulative lifelong (beginning at conception) exposure to a million or more commercial, occupational, and environmental chemicals. Forty-seven percent of the 86,405 chemicals registered with the United States Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) inventory as of June 2020 are actively manufactured, processed, or imported, and each of these has manufacturing impurities and conversion products. Few are routinely biomonitored in humans, and many of the commercial chemicals, along with legacy pollutants from prior commercial uses, biotransformation products, and impurities, exist as “dark matter” of the human exposome.The Total Toxin Burden Panel looks at the accumulative toxin burden (Exposome) in each person. With tens of thousands of chemicals in our environment and more introduced every day, the exposome measures these complex, non-genetic exposures we face and their impact on our health. Both conceptually and practically, the exposome provides a holistic view of human health and disease. It includes exposures from our diets, our lifestyles, our behaviors, and even exposures that occur in the womb. It also includes how our bodies respond to these challenges. When coupled with advances in genetics and medicine, the potential of the exposome will help lead to improved strategies aimed at preventing and treating diseases, such as autism, diabetes, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. The Total Toxin Burden Panel combines the Environmental Toxins, Mycotoxins, Heavy Metals and PFAS Chemical tests to measure a wide variety of toxins.
